New Hinanana art: Unmasked Soh

When I first glanced at the thumbnail image, and hadn't translated the caption yet to know it was Hinanana's art, I thought Yoshiro was drawn beside a different Capcom character.

Looking closer, I saw it's Soh, unmasked!

Words can't describe how much I love this pair.

The bones on the right of Yoshiro caught my attention. The decay and beauty theme in Kunitsu-Gami's art should've been felt more in the game.
The game's aesthetic could have afforded to go darker, to match the art.

I wonder what Hinanana was told of the story? I wish I could ask them, to better understand their perspective when illustrating the characters.

Especially when it comes to the faces.

Halloween: a pumpkin!

I thought this was in-game but when I checked, it wasn't...

If Kunitsu-Gami had seasonal content, they'd probably let us know.

My 'Play' Anniversary!

Today was the day I first bought and played Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess!

I played the demo on 25th July last year. The wait to buy it on sale was agony...

But I had quite a few dreams about the game.

What made me remember this game was Youtube recommending me its battle tracks because I had been listening to Okami's music. Upon hearing Villager Rhythm Opus 2, I immediately went to check the price of the game, then downloaded the demo and the rest came after...

Yoshiro's face and why it never changes.

In the artbook, we can the Maiden's face changes into Soh's once she becomes Yoshiro: physically conveying she's fused, or has begun to fuse, with the Goddess.
(Combined with her plaque, the fusion would be easier to realize. A god to humans and a human to gods implies a 'mixed' state of being.)

Soh's face is then the face of the Goddess. All Maidens gain this face upon becoming Yoshiro.

But in-game, this physical change never happens.

In the canon cycle, Yoshiro retains her face.

Is it related to Cursed Soh, who is the complete fusion of Soh, the former Maiden, and the Goddess? As in, our Yoshiro can't fuse with the Goddess that far anymore because the Goddess is fully fused to Soh? And so this is reflected in Yoshiro's face, which never changes to that of the Goddess.
(But then again, Yoshiro would still then be able to fuse to Soh as Soh is the Goddess as well, due to the fusion and not just because she 'becomes' the Goddess through the mask)

Buuuut, I think Soh only becomes the Mountain Goddess, whole and complete, upon defeating Cursed Soh.
So perhaps Yoshiro was unable to fuse with the Goddess in a way that would physically change her.

Or was Yoshiro's face never changed because they didn't have time to implement it?

We would need to see the Maiden, her becoming Yoshiro and then seeing her face change. That way, the end reveal of Soh's face would make it clear the Messenger is a former Maiden who also fused.

Soh's Spirit Stone. 2.0

I grabbed high quality screenshots from the opening video of the PC version of Kunitsu-Gami.

Some details that couldn't be seen before...

Soh's Spirit Stone has no face. (Or wasn't rendered one?)

There's a spike protruding from the facial area. We don't know what parts of her turned first but it must have been terrifying for her if it began in her face first.

That gaping crevice on her left arm is unsettling.

She's crystallized in a strange position. Why that pose? It gives the impression of one awaiting something. Sitting, or slightly crouching, on one leg. This post would look very odd in the mikoshi.
It would also look odd if she were watching her Messenger defeat Nanamagari.

Yoshiro's pose is understandable. Sitting on her side.

I wish we could have seen another cycle.

Could we, one day, maybe get a DLC of a previous cycle with a different Maiden?

Because of my previous posts on faces, I wonder if this is really 'Soh's Spirit Stone', or if a Maiden's Spirit Stone is just a way to pray to the Goddess.

Then again, if Maidens merge, then Soh is a previous Maiden having merged and so she is the Goddess now. (And she is, judging by artwork, lore and interviews)

Maiden detail.

In the ending, the Maiden is already wearing red eyeshadow.

Is this Yoshiro's model?

Silhouette: Cursed Soh's Message.

Looking at this animation again, I realized that Cursed Soh doesn't take on a silhouette of Yoshiro.

The two silhouettes are actually on top of each other to the point of becoming one, signifying a merging during a prayer.

Cursed Soh tells us that through prayer, Yoshiro and Soh merged.

But that Yoshiro held more defilement in her, resulting in Cursed Soh? Or is it just because its's happened so many times and the ultimate result is the defiled Goddess?

More importantly, she specifically antagonizes Yoshiro. So, she blames the Maiden?

Kunitsu-Gami is definitely using the 'Maidens fusing with the Mountain God through worship' belief.
