The villagers and a Seethe have the pattern...maybe because they're trying to visually imply the Seethe are severely impure villagers? From their stories, that much is clear but this is actually visually showing it.

Theory: The descendants of the ancestral deities don't turn into Seethe. They only become cocooned.

It must be related to their ability to wear the masks of their ancestors.

The pattern beneath the Mazo Talisman box is strange though. Why is it there?
