Kunitsu-Gami's New Pricing + thoughts on its missed potential with the 8 cycles.

Kunitsu-Gami seems to have undergone a permanent price-drop.

My thoughts:

  1. Won't this encourage people not to buy games at launch?
  2. Doesn't this give the impression the game is so bad, they had to permanently mark it down?
Doesn't it imply the company itself lost faith in its value?

Such things aside...

I checked the PSN store for the price in my country and the new price is a lot less then what I paid even when I bought it on sale.

(I overpaid...and I even overpaid for the OST because I bought it from a Japanese music store online because it wasn't available anywhere. Then when it was, it was much cheaper on Steam...)

I saw an article that mentioned it had poor sales. (But so did Okami and now that's a name most of us know. Whether its popularity matches its sales, I can't say. Many people watch walkthroughs now and don't actually play the games they are a fan of. But Okami's price is very reasonable now!)

Anyway, I feel a little bitter. It's the most expensive game I own and I bought it on sale. But some of the bitterness is mitigated by knowing I don't wish I had waited to buy it. I'm happy I bought it earlier.

The title 'Path of the Goddess' caught my attention. After watching the launch trailer, I made a 'new husband dropped' joke after seeing Soh. A knight-like figure serving a Goddess. A husband but also literally me. One flesh, and all.

I thought Yoshiro was a Goddess and that Soh was some kind of divine figure guarding her. It looked interesting but I wasn't sure how much I'd like it. The gameplay didn't excite me and the colors looked a little 'washed out' somehow. But Maiden games are a favorite. If a game has a Maiden, I'm playing it.

Months later, I played the demo and nearly died waiting for it to go on sale. I had dreams about it.

It's a fantastic game(I did make a blog for it, after all), but it needed more. They could've done a lot with the 8 cycle concept. Given us a new Maiden every playthrough and maybe have changed things up with what occurs on the levels during the new cycles.

If they had, its expensive price would've been absolutely worth it and it would've kept the game feeling fresh. All the Maidens could've had different personalities and we'd be able to see it in interactions between Sohs and their Maidens. It'd be like experiencing a new game all over again even if they're using the same assets.

But if they'd done it this way, we could struggle to get attached to any one Maiden or any one Soh, which will change the feeling of the game. (In a way I feel ambivalent about as I've mentioned wanting to play the game with only Yoshiro and Soh for an Ico experience. I like these characters and having too many versions could be detrimental.)

((Also...I like the main pair. But I just wanted more interactions between them. This is the root of my dissatisfaction.))

With Soh representing all previous 6 Maidens, and herself, I like to imagine Yoshiro representing all the Maidens as well.
